Jurisdiction

The Court of the Bishop (Consistory) of the Commissary of the Archdeaconry of Richmond Western Deaneries included the deaneries of Amounderness, Copeland, Furniss, Kendal, and Lonsdale. The court held jurisdiction over Lancashire parishes immediately north of the River Ribble all the way up to and even across the northern Lancashire county border. Boundaries of this probate jurisdictions include county border parishes with portion of boundaries overlaying in counties Cumberland and Yorkshire. When a search of this courts’ probate records fails to provide the desired probate record, be sure to search the Prerogative Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury as well.
