The map and list above are those counties that evolved over many hundreds of years and were in active use until 1889. Also know as the ancient counties.
Abbreviations (Champman codes)
Sometimes known as Geographic, these were introduced in 1974 primarily as a way to define areas for county councils. These are probably what most people in England would recognise as counties today.
Introduced in 1889, with subsequent changes in 1965, 1974, and 1997, and now also known as district/unitary authorities, these are the modern 'counties' in use by the government.
