1538- June 1837

Starting in 1538, churches kept records of each person buried in their church yards. Public cemeteries existed since the late 1800s. To learn more about burial records...

July 1837-present

During this time, the government recorded deaths, no matter which religious affiliation or place of burial. The report of the death and related information was given to the local superintendant. He would write it in his register, and forward a copy to the Registrar General.  Read more about death records...
