Order of Indexing - Example
Dual Dating - Over time, countries have switched calendars. You could find two dates listed during the time when the calendar was changing. See the project instructions, project updates, and field helps on how to handle dual dates. In most cases, index the first date listed as the date of the event.
Marital Status Fields- Do not use Mr or Mrs to determine marital status - Example
Wife's Surname -Entries listed as Mary wife of John Smith - do not index Smith as Mary's surname
Indexing the records in the correct order - Supplement to the Indexing Presentation
Dates - Do not assume that a change in the date from December to January also includes a change in the year. (In 1752, most of the British empire changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. The adoption of the Gregorian calendar changed the beginning of the legal year from March 25 to Janury 1)
