Vital Records

See Indiana Vital Records for more information about Vital records in Indiana.

Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Indiana began recording birth and death records in 1882. These records are held in the county health office. This remained in effect until the state board of health began in October 1907 for births, and January 1900 for deaths. Marriage records, in Indiana, began in 1788 and became mandatory in 1800. Statewide collections for Indiana did not begin until 1958.

Original marriage records are held at the respective county clerk's office.
