Specific Instructions for FamilySearch County Histories

1. You will be adding information to the FamilySearch county page by editing in wiki text. *If you have questions about editing, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.

2. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page.

3. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password (https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Main_Page)

4. Scroll to the sub heading, Local History, which is under the heading, History.

5. Click at the following familysearch.org link to go to familysearch.org

6. Once at the FamilySearch website, click on the word, "Catalog." At the next screen you will see two boxes. The box on the left is labeled "Search" with "Place-names" in the box, and the box on the right is labeled "For."

7. In the box labeled "For," type the name of the county you have chosen followed by a comma and New Jersey, click on the phrase when it appears below the box and then click the "search button." This will take you to a list of sources available through the Family History Library for that county.

8. Click on the word "History" to see a list of the books available through the Family History Library. Click on each link to determine if the book would be useful for others; therefore good to put on the Wiki.

9. When you determine which books you would like to have on the Wiki,go back to the window you have open for the FamilySearch county wiki page and click the edit box, which is to the far right of the heading, "Local History." If there isn't an edit box next to "Local History," click the edit box next to the heading "History." Then click on the word, "wikitext," which will bring you to the wiki text field.

10. You will now enter the books found into the FamilySearch county wiki page under the heading Local History. The format follows:

  • (a) : (colon)
  • If the format in the wiki is already established and does not have a colon, follow the format already established.
  • (b) * (star)
  • (c) The catalog entry:
  • Author , Title in italics, Publication information in parenthesis, Call number or film number, brief description.
  • For the author, type the last name, comma, and then the first name. If there is the name of a society or a series of authors, type them as written.
  • To make italics put two '' before and after the title. Be sure to capitalize the proper words in the title.
  • For the Publication information, type it the same way it is typed in the catalog.
  • To add a call, film or fiche number type the following: {{FHL|the title number|item|disp=FHL book, fiche or film}} The title number is found in the url at the top of the page. It is the number usually found at the end of the URL following an F. i.e. item%2F94879. The item number would be 94879.
  • If there is both a call number and a fiche or film number, put the film and fiche numbers first.
  • A brief description, if needed, such as "not complete," "index only," "transcription."

11. In the "Summary" box at the bottom of the page add the words, "Added FamilySearch County Histories" and then click the Save page button.
