Description

The purpose of this task is to locate pertinent online newspapers available at the Library of Congress and Ancestry.com and add the information and links to the FamilySearch Wiki.

General Instructions

1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose a county to edit.

2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task. Sign-up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart below.


Adding a Heading: Online Newspapers

1. You will be adding information to the FamilySearch county page by editing in wiki text. If you have questions about editing, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.

2. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page.

3. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password.

4. Scroll to the heading Newspapers.

Find the final information after the introduction. There may also be information under the heading Historical Newspapers by Name. Scroll to the final information after this heading.

5. On a new line, and in wiki text, copy and paste the following phrase: '''Online Newspapers'''.

6. You may find that other contributors have already added information and links under the Newspaper heading.

  • You will need to decide if these are the same newspapers you are locating with identical links, or if they are unique links.
  • You will need to decide if these newspapers are online digital papers or if they are simply names of newspapers which were published for your county.
  • In wiki text, move the already-posted newspapers under their correct heading.
-Click on the wiki text window at the top left-hand corner of the page.
-Click and drag your mouse over the words and links which need to be moved.
-Right click to open an edit box.
-Click on "Cut".
-Move your cursor to the correct place on the page.
-Right click to open an edit box.
-Click on "Paste".

7. As you complete the task you will better see if any of these links are duplicates or if they are unique.

8. As you finish your task, remove any duplicate entries. If you wish, you may fix any entries to reflect formatting consistent with the instructions on this task.

Specific Instructions for Library of Congress Newspapers

1. You will be adding a link to any Ohio newspapers for your county which are found in the Library of Congress' online digital collection.

2. The many of the newspapers are identified by city only. You will need to identify the cities in your county by doing aGoogle search.

a. Type "<county name> Ohio Wikipedia" in the Google search box.
b. Open the county Wikipedia page.
c. In the table of contents on the Wikipedia page, click on "Cities" under the heading "Local Government".
d. You will compare this list of cities to the names of the Library of Congress Ohio Digital Newspapers in the next step.

3. Click on this link to the Library of Congress.

4. Compare the list of newspapers to the list of cities you found on Wikipedia.

5. If you do not find any newspapers your task is complete. Go to Ancestry Newspapers on this page

6. If you find an newspaper for your county, add it under the heading Online Newspapers. Use the following format:

  • (a) Type a: (colon)
  • (b) Type a * (star)
  • (c) Type the date range of the newspaper. Put this date between three '''. This will bold the date.
  • (d) Add a space.
  • (e) Add the Library of Congress entry with accompanying url link:
[url(web address) of the collection SPACE title of the newspaper]
The entire link and title must be enclosed by brackets [ ].
-Url (Web Address) of the collection: To get to the url or web address of the newspaper, be sure you have clicked on the title of the newspaper, which will take you to a summary page. This is the page with the web address (url) that will go into the FamilySearch wiki.
-Begin by typing a bracket: [
-To add the url link, hover the cursor over the url or web address on the Library of Congress website page. This is at the top of the page in the web address box. Right click your mouse. This will highlight the address and an edit box will appear. Right click on COPY. Return to the wiki county page and after the " [ " right click and PASTE.
  • Space It is important to put one space between the url and the title.
  • Title of the newspaper:
  • Type the title of the newspaper. 
  • To make italics put two '' before and after the title. Be sure to capitalize the proper words in the title.
  • End by typing another bracket: ]
  • -free
  • Add the word -free after the name of the newspaper. Remember to add the dash before the word free.
  • (f) Add a brief description, if needed, such as "not all years complete,"

7. In the "Summary" box at the bottom of the page add the words, "Added Library of Congress County Newspapers" and then click the Save page button.

Specific Instructions for Ancestry Historic Newspapers

1. You will find and add any online historic newspapers for your county posted on Ancestry.com

2. Click at the following ancestry.com link to go to Ancestry.com

3. Once at the Ancestry.com website, look to the right of the webpage and click on the county you have chosen to work on. A list of all databases and digital books for that county will appear.

4. Review the databases listed under the section "County Newspapers & Publications" to determine if any newspapers are digitzed and posted in Ancestry.com's collection.

8. Go back to the window you have open for the FamilySearch county wiki page and click the edit box, which is to the right of the heading, Newspapers.  Then click on the word, wikitext, which will bring you to the wiki text field.

9. You will now enter the databases found in Ancestry into the FamilySearch county wiki page under Online Newspapers. If you found newspapers in the Library of Congress, add the Ancestry newspapersa after the Library of Congree newspapers.

The format is:

  • (a) Type a: (colon)

Assignment Chart

If you are accepting this task:

1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your county of choice.
4. Type 4 tildes (~). This symbol is located on the upper left-hand part of your keyboard, next to the number 1. The ~~~~ is an electronic signature and will leave your user name and date when you signed.
5. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Selected Preble County for adding ancestry county histories".
6. Click on the box "Save Page".
7. You are now signed up to complete this task.
