The Sonoma County History & Genealogy Library is a part of the central Sonoma County Library located in Santa Rosa California. The library system includes twelve branch libraries in the greater Santa Rosa area. In 2002 the growing collection of local genealogical and history was moved to a separate building. The library’s genealogical collections extend beyond the local level and include national and international reference materials and periodicals.

Local Genealogical Information

Sonoma County History Index: A detailed index to names, places, and events contained in several thousand local history books. The database is searchable online by name, place, event, etc.

  • Sonoma County Newspapers (Press Democrat): microfilm, 1857 to 1969
  • Sonoma County City Directories 1874 – 1969
  • California City Directories: 1874 – 1969
  • Photographic Collection: Approximately 35,000 photographs of Sonoma County from 1800’s through 2000. Approximately 60% have been digitized and are available on-line and indexed in the Central Library Catalog.

  • Ancestry.com: Access to Ancestry’s Library Edition is available from computers at all branch libraries. Wireless connections are available only within the library.
