Parish History


Hernhill St Michael is an Ancient Parish; the church is the third to be built on the site.  The parish includes the hamlets of Crockham, Dargate, The Fostall, Lamberhurst, Oakwell, Staple Street, Thread, Waterham and Wey Street.

The Saxon wooden church was replaced in 1120 by a stone and wood church dedicated to St Stephen.

The present church dates from 1450 and was rebuilt in 1833 and restored in 1867 and 1877, with a further extension in 1927 and 1997 refurbished bell tower.

The church is designated a grade I listed building by English Heritage.
