Quick History

Kanab is the County Seat for Kane County
County Courthouse
76 North Main St.
Kanab, UT 84741

Kanab began in 1858 as a crude dugout built by the great Mormon frontiersman and Indian missionary Jacob Hamblin. Kanab is derived from an Indian word meaning “place of willows” [1] A fort was build by Mormon settlers in 1865 as a defense from the Indians and a base camp for travelers and explorers. Three different attempts were made to settle this area with the final succeeding. [2] A group of settlers from the abandoned Muddy River Mission in Nevada and a few families from the Cottonwood area of Salt Lake City lead by Levi Stewart moved into the locale in 1870. [3] Citizens elected their first town president and town council in August of 1885.
