The county was named after <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England">King William III of England</a> (1650-1702) and his wife <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_II_of_England">Queen Mary II</a> (1662-1694) who ruled the American colonies at the time of King and Queen County's organization.

It was signed by people from all over Virginia who wanted an end to persecution of Baptists by the Established Church. Baptists and Baptist sympathizers alike signed the petition.
