Civil registration began in 1837. Original records are kept at local civil registration offices. Copies were sent to the national registrar.

LancashireBMD is transcribing indexes to Lancastrians' births (8,000,000+ entries), marriages (4,000,000+ entries), and deaths (4,000,000+ entries). The national index is available at FreeBMD.
