History

Parent County

Lee County was created from Indian lands ceded to the U.S.in 1825. It was abolished in 1826 due to treaty problems and recreated in Dec. 1826 from lands ceded in 1826. The county seat switched between Starkville and Webster until 1872 when it became Wooten Station. The courthouse in Starkville burned in 1858 with all of the county records. Another fire in 1872 destroyed the temporary courthouse in Leesburg.
