Linn county was created from Champoeg County 28 December 1847. Named for U.S. Senator Lewis F. Linn of Missouri. Parts were taken for Lane 28 January 1851, Umpqua 28 January 1851 and Wasco 11 January 1854.

The county seat is Albany.
