Chapelry History

Lydiate St Thomas was created a district chapelry in 1841 from Halsall, Lancashire  Ancient Parish.

The church dates from 1250 and after several reconstructions is still a place of worship in the Diocese of Liverpool and Ormskirk deanery (formerly the Diocese of Chester). Benefice of Saint Cuthbert and Thomas, Halsall, Lydiate and Downholland includes St Thomas parish.

Halsall is a village and civil parish in West Lancashire, England, located close to Ormskirk on the A5147 and Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The church and much of the village stand on a rocky ridge, in marked contrast to the low-lying flat peat mossland between the ridge and the sand of Ainsdale and Birkdale.

"LYDIATE, a township which a district chapel, in the parish of Halsall, union of Ormskirk, hundred of West Derby, S. division of the county of Lancaster, 3½ miles soutwest by west of Ormskirk. A church was built in 1841, at Lydiate-Cross. A district has been assigned to this church, consisting of parts of Lydiate and Down-Holland".

Lydiate Hall was built, in the 16th century, and possibly from the reformation, used as a Roman Catholic chapel.[1]
