:*NOTE: for Mahoning County, OH the court records currently available through Familysearch are the Transcribed Court Records, not the original Probate Estate or Probate Civil Case Packets. Transcribed court records do not usually contain original signatures, nor is every individual document transcribed by the court which pertains to that case packet. Interim and final reports and other legal documents required by the court are transcribed by a clerk from the actual documents. Frequently there are additional documents within the original case packet itself that are not deemed necessary to transcribe. Mahoning County is fortunate in that both transcribed records and original packets exist for a significant period. Human error is always a factor in transcribing records. There may also be instances where the original does not exist any longer but the transcription does. It is strongly suggested that researchers seek out both the Transcribed Records, and the Original packets where-ever possible.
:*'''1846–1899''' - Original Mahoning County Probate Estate Case Packets ;are housed at the [http://www.mahoninghistory.org/archhome.htm Mahoning Valley Historical Society Archive]. These packets contain the original documents, with actual signatures; wills, administration applications, bonds, inventories, receipts, affidavits, and any other record needed to settle an estate. These packets are the originals.

+
:*'''ca. 1870-1905.''' Original Mahoning County Probate Civil Case packets are housed at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society's Archival Library. These cases include but are not limited to: civil cases, divorces, guardianships, inquests of lunacy, applications for the Worthy Blind (1904-1905), judgements, land transfers resulting from estate files, legal name changes, adoptions, etc. These are original documents with actual signatures.
Probate

Probate records created after 1852 are held by the Mahoning County, Ohio Genealogy Probate Court. From 1797 or the creation of the county, probate records were held by the Court of Common Pleas. Most counties transferred all records to the Probate Court, but in some circumstances, Court of Common Pleas records should be searched for records prior to 1852. Most records are housed at the Mahoning County, Ohio Genealogy Courthouse. Some records are on microfilm at the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Family History Library. For more complete information about the location of county probate records see:

See the wiki page Ohio Probate Records for information about how to use probate records.

Content: Probate Records may give the decedent's date of death, names of his or her spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, neighbors, associates, relatives, and their place of residence.

Record types: Wills, estates, guardianships, naturalizations, marriage, adoption, and birth and death records (1867-1908 only).

 • 1790–1967 - Ohio, Probate Records, 1790-1967 at FamilySearch Historical Records – free. This collection consists of probate records and estate files from county courthouses in Ohio. The content and time period varies by county, with more records being added as they become available. This Collection will include records from 1789 to 1996. Currently, (September 2012) the collection is only searchable by browsing the images. A list of Fires that have destroyed records in the courthouses of several counties are listed on the Record Description page.
 • NOTE: for Mahoning County, OH the court records currently available through Familysearch are the Transcribed Court Records, not the original Probate Estate or Probate Civil Case Packets.
 • 1846–1899 - Original Mahoning County Probate Estate Case Packets ;are housed at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society Archive. These packets contain the original documents, with actual signatures; wills, administration applications, bonds, inventories, receipts, affidavits, and any other record needed to settle an estate. These packets are the originals.
 • ca. 1870-1905. Original Mahoning County Probate Civil Case packets are housed at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society's Archival Library. These cases include but are not limited to: civil cases, divorces, guardianships, inquests of lunacy, applications for the Worthy Blind (1904-1905), judgements, land transfers resulting from estate files, legal name changes, adoptions, etc. These are original documents with actual signatures.

Connecticut Western Reserve in northeast Ohio.png
The Connecticut Western Reserve was a part of northeast Ohio originally intended for settlement by Revolutionary War refugees from Connecticut.[3] The former Connecticut Western Reserve lands were in the modern counties of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Trumbull fully, but also in parts of Ashland, Mahoning, Ottawa, Summit, and Wayne counties in Ohio.

The Research Library at the Western Reserve Historical Society History Center is the premier repository for Cleveland, Ohio and Connecticut Western Reserve history material. One of the principal strengths is its manuscript collections.[4] The WRHS collection has original land records, genealogies of New England, New York, and Pennsylvania, biographies, histories, and family Bibles.[3]

Taxation

Ohio tax records complement land records and can be used in place of censuses before 1820 or to supplement the years between censuses. Because only persons who owned taxable property were listed, many residents were not included in tax lists. There may also be gaps of several years in the tax records of some counties. For more information see the wiki page Ohio Taxation.

Original county tax lists are available 1846, and parts of the county for 1859 at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

Vital Records

See Ohio Vital Records for more information about Vital records in Ohio.

Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Although Ohio enacted a statute in 1856 -1857 requiring registration of births, deaths and marriages, many did not comply. A second law occurred in 1867 but, again, was not always followed. By 1908, the law was more clearly defined and kept. Any existing birth and death records from 1867 through December 19, 1908 are located at the Mahoning County Probate Court. The Ohio Department of Health has birth records filed after December 20, 1908 and death records filed after January 1, 1954 while the Ohio Historical Society houses death records from December 20, 1908 through December 31, 1953. In addtion, the Youngstown City Health District has births 1909 to present and deaths 1892 to present.

Original marriage records are held at the office of the Mahoning County Probate Court with divorce records located with the Clerk of Court.
