History

Parent County

1861--Mitchell County was created from Yancey, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, and McDowell Counties. County seat: Davis (1866-1868); Bakersville (1868-present).  In 1863 justices agreed to hold court at Norman's Hill located in Bakersville (founded 1857), at Eben Child's (1861), at the Baptist Meeting House on Bear Creek (1862), Bakersville (1863), Bear Creek Meeting House (1864), Calhoun (1865), Davis (1866-1868), then Bakersville (1868-present).

Several records believed destroyed during move into new courthouse in 1907.
