New Zealand Gotoarrow.png Taxation

Tax records give little genealogical information other than identifying where an ancestor lived. Because tax records are difficult to find, are often unindexed, and give limited information, search them only after you have exhausted other sources.

Only a few taxation records exist for New Zealand, the most important to the genealogist being the returns of freeholders.

Returns of Freeholders

This record was made in October 1882 and was actually a census of land owners. Information in the returns includes names, addresses and occupations of landholders, area and value of land. These returns are held by the Land Purchase Department in New Zealand and are available at the Family History Library. (Family History Library film 1066521, item 2.)

There are a few other taxation records available on a local or district level for New Zealand. All taxation records will be found in the Family History Library Catalog under:

NEW ZEALAND - TAXATION

NEW ZEALAND - [TOWN] - TAXATION
