Originally named for town of Quinamkot. The Dutch renamed it [[Nieuw Amstell County, Delaware|Nieuw Amstel]] in 1657 after conquering it from the Swedes. Tne English captured the town and renamed it New Castle. The county was also renamed [[New Castle County, Delaware|New Castle]] County (English Castle is a twist on Dutch Amstel - which is Kaastel.)
