Where did my ancestor come from in Hannover? Do I know his date of birth, marriage or death? Were any of these events before 1876? If answered yes, research needs to be started with church records. Church records are kept either by the parish priest if the books are still in use, otherwise they are found in archives (ecclesiastical or state). For instance, the Evangelical-Lutheran church records for the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the Duchy of Braunschweig are in the State Archives of Oldenburg and Wolfenbüttel respectively. The State Archive of Bückeburg has microfiche of the Schaumburg church books. Getting Started with Hannover Research

Before starting research in Hannover, several questions need to be asked. For instance: What do I already know about the area of interest? What genealogical sources do exist for the area of interest? Who created the sources? Which repository has the sources I need? Who is an expert for my area of research? All these questions lead to more questions.

The State Archive of Stade has duplicate church books for the Duchies of Bremen and Verden for the years 1715-1852.

If just Hannover is known as place of origin, the following source: Kirchenbuchindex, 1774-1875 Evangelische Kirche Hannover (StKr. Hannover) available through the Family History Center network should be checked out. These films list all names of people belonging to the Evangelical church in the city of Hannover. If the family name is not found here, the family is most likely from the Kingdom of Hannover instead of the city of Hannover. If the Family History Library has the records in question they can be found under the name of the record keeping church. (Not every village had a church or had the authority to keep records!) Here is a link to all those Hannover parishes which have been filmed by the Landeskirchliche Archiv (Evangelical Church Archive) of Hannover. Click on "Verfilmte Kirchenbücher - detaillierte Auflistung". Records can be obtained through the

Kirchenbuchamt Hannover

Hildesheimer Strasse 165/167

If the research pertains to any time after the year 1876, research needs to begin with civil registration records, the records of the Standesamt. There are rules of what can be obtained from such an office. If the records have been archived they can be found in so called Stadtarchive (city archives), communal or state archives. Note: For a brief time civil registration records were kept when the Electorate of Hannover was part of the French Empire. Read about it here

Another way to start your family research is to use a so called Ortsfamilienbuch (village lineage book). If the research is reliable such a book is a great resource because family names have been thoroughly researched and linked. Here is a link to some such books prepared for Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen).
An additional source to check for a lineage book is to browse the Family History Catalog at www.familysearch.org In the field “place search” enter your town, then look for “genealogies”.

The greatest hurdle in accessing the correct information is knowing where to look and what to look for. Rough guidelines can be found here however, one has to get a clue about ecclesiastical and secular administrations, their jurisdictions and responsibilities for ones area of research.

Jurisdictions

The spiritual/secular authorities in the Kingdom of Hanover (1814-1866)

The authorities (Obrigkeiten) were persons or institutions of secular or ecclesiastical nature who were installed to exercise power in factual and legal ways over the population in the Kingdom of Hanover. The populace owed obedience to the hierarchy.
The religious rulers were the Catholic bishops and abbots and the Evangelical superintendants. The local priest was the man in charge within his parish boundaries. The secular leaders were the king and the landowners.
Following are the names of various administrations in the Kingdom of Hanover:

Secular administrations were:
Amt
Amtsvogtei
Bergamt
Berggericht
Burgvogtei
Commissariat
Gericht
Gohgericht
Gräfengericht
Magistrat
Patrimonialgericht
Standesherrliches Amt
Strukturgericht
Vogteigericht

Ecclesiastical administrations were:
Klosteramt
Kirchenspielgericht
Stiftsamt

The Kingdom of Hanover was divided into Landdrosteibezirke (largest districts) to which belonged Fürstenthümer (principalities) and/or Grafschaften (earldoms) and Herzogthümer (duchies).
Thus the Kingdom of Hanover was administered into: (the following pages are in German. Click on the button "Translate" on the top and the text can be read in English):
