History

Parent County

Rutherford County was established in 1779 from Tryon County when it was divided to form Rutherford and Lincoln counties. Courthouse fire in 1907 destroyed many court records. County seat: Gilbert Town (1781- 1785); Rutherfordton (1787-present).
