Brief History

The Original Town of Rutland was chartered in 1761 and was later divided into the Town of Proctor, the Town of West Rutland and the City of Rutland. At the same time Proctor and West Rutland were created, the village of Rutland was incorporated to give it partly independent status. Six years later, in 1892, it was made a wholly independent city. After the division was accomplished, the town of Rutland was left with about half the acreage it had when it was chartered, and only a fraction of the population that it had in 1880.

The present 12,000 acre Town of Rutland is home to considerable commercial activity as well as a siginificant number of manufacturing jobs. With a population of slightly over 4000 residents the Town of Rutland is the third largest municipality in Rutland County, VT. The population was 5,954 at the 2010 census. Rutland Town completely surrounds the city of Rutland.[1] [2]
