Registration forms for the population started after 1850, when modern municipal administration began to develop. All the inhabitants of a particular municipality or town had to be reported, or registered, at a specific municipal office. Also recorded were any changes of residence, even if the people concerned remained in the same municipality.

City of Ljubljana and its suburbs

There are two sets of the registration forms preserved in the Ljubljana Municipal Archive for the City of Ljubljana. Earlier set is from the Austrian Empire period and the later set is from the Republic of Yugoslavia. These forms were not kept after the Second World War (after 1945).

A registration form was filled out for each family in a particular municipality. The entries include the head of household, followed by the name of wife, children and other relatives with whom the family shared the residence. In case of a married woman, sometimes her maiden name was given. Forms are arranged alphabetically by the surnames and names of the heads of households and are more useful for genealogical research than census forms.
