Hello,

Why is it written.

• Before 1800, the name of the father; after 1800, also the name of the mother

• The date of the christening; after 1800, also the date of birth

I have seen many records that show the mother before 1800, and many birth dates before 1800. Why was 1800 chosen?

.............................................

Although you may see this pattern in the parish you are working in, there was never a standardization of "how" the church records were to be kept. I have worked in many pre 1800 birth and christening records that show the full name of the father and mother (although generally the earlier you go, the more common it is to have only the fathers name.)

Hope this helps,
