Thuringia - Sachsen Schwarzburg Sonderhausen – Fürstentum (principality)Military RecordsEdit This Page
From FamilySearch Wiki
During peace times young men were recruited who had to complete military duties in order to replace those who had been released from service, had died, had been wounded, imprisoned or were missing in action. Most young men were recruited and listed in Stammrollen (recruitment registers). All military aged men of a village were on the list of their administration office as well as under surveillance of the draft officials. The recruits and their relatives were obligated to report any changes in addresses. Also, the civil registration personnel had to proivde necessary excerpts without charge.
Sometimes, the word "Stammrolle" would be raplaced with the name of the squadron or was titled "troop".
The recruits were listed by their names, their professions, their place of residence and reference was made to their birth certificates. Other lists were kept like censuses, indicating the name of the recruit, his father's name, his birth date and -place and whether the candidate was living at home. In the "remark column" indications were given of where the young man might be if he was absent, i.e., he emigrated to America. Attached to the Stammrollen were also petitions and releases from service if the candidate was unfit or had to serve as the provider for his family.
Stammrollen for Sachsen-Altenburg can be found through FamilySearch, catalog, keyword: Stammrollen and can be ordered through the Family History Center network. Otherwise, Stammrollen can be found in the Kreisarchive/Stadtarchive (district or municipal archives) of Thüringen. At some point all municipal records were transferred to district archives. With the archival reforms of 1992 it was determined that municipal records should be handled by municipal archives. However, most municipal archives opted for leaving their records with the district archives. For further information see:
