Early census taking (1850s)
usually just gives information according to numbers. Besides the name of the heads of household, all other information is strictly numerical. For instance, we find the numbers of members living in a household, the number of servants, the number of men 14 years and older, the number of women 14 years and older, the number of children 14 years and younger, the number of all persons living in a given household, the number of all persons living in a house, the number of families living in a single house.
The following article by the Max-Planck- Institute explains the development of census taking throughout Germany with graphics for a quick overview of how each German state handled the issue. Read the article at http://www.demogr.mpg.de/papers/working/wp-2009-023.pdf
