Chapelry History

UNSWORTH, a hamlet, in the township of Pilkington, parish of Prestwich cum Oldham, hundred of Salford, S. division of Lancashire, 3 miles (S. S. E.) from Bury, on the road to Manchester. It forms the eastern part of Pilkington township. Unsworth is the head of a chapelry, of much larger extent than the hamlet, and which includes part of the parish of Middleton. The chapel, dedicated to St. George, was consecrated in Nov. 1730, the site being given by the then Earl of Derby: it was rebuilt in 1843. There are places of worship for dissenters and excellent schools.[1]
