  • “Excellent exposures of Late Mesozoic and Early Tertiary rocks occur widely in the Joes Valley Reservoir Quadrangle. These rocks accumulated in a transition zone between the Sevier uplift to the west, and the Cretaceous Mancos Sea to the east. A system of en Echelon north-south fault zones, perhaps related to folding of the Wasatch Monocline and salt doming, interrupt the gentle west and southwest dips of strata in the quadrangle. Some of these spectacularly exposed horsts and grabens have movement as late as post-glaciation. Need for a geologic map of the quadrangle, combined with structural and stratigraphic data to help evaluate mining feasibility of coal within the Blackhawk Formation prompted this investigation.
