The University Archives houses records of several administrative units on campus. Accessions include: operating files, minutes, correspondence and reports; access to some material may be restricted. Semiofficial records include acquisitions from the Students’ Union and the Faculty Association and from individuals such as the first principal, Dr. A.L. Doucette, and the first president, Dr. H.S. Armstrong. Yearbooks are available as well as calendars, annual reports, handbooks, news clippings, convocation lists and commemorative programmes. The Archives also retains various newsletter publications including the very early University Report, The Gazette and the student newspaper, the Gauntlet.

Approximately 80,000 photographs have been organized and indexed. Archival copies of University of Calgary masters theses and doctoral dissertations are housed in the University Archives. The bibliography of theses and dissertations provides access by author, title, supervisor, department, subject, and geographic region. Earlier records reflect the university’s origins in the Calgary Normal School. The University Archives has an incomplete set of Normal School yearbooks published under various titles as well as a handsome leather-bound manuscript chronicle prepared by the class of 1936-1937. A preliminary announcement and a calendar from 1912-1915 document an attempt to develop a university in Calgary nearly three-quarters of a century ago.

Finding aids or boxlists for 80 percent of accessions and on the Archives Network of Alberta Database.

The Banff Centre began in 1933 as part of the University of Alberta, transferred to the University of Calgary in 1966, and became autonomous in 1978. It has evolved to become a centre for training mid-career professionals in all facets of the arts and management. Initially called the Banff School of Fine Arts, it is now called The Banff Centre for Continuing Education, and is composed of three divisions: Centre for the Arts, Centre for Management and Centre for Conferences.

The mandate consists of all official records, specifically those records made, received and accumulated by Banff Centre officials and various governing bodies of The Banff Centre. In addition, semiofficial records (including Centre-sponsored clubs, associations, newsletters & calendars), private papers of faculty and staff, and publications of resident artists, alumni and faculty are collected. The holdings consist of written documents, photographs, videos, sound recordings, technical drawings, production set models and posters. Restrictions apply in some areas.

Please note the collection is recent, dating from 1978. Earlier records may be available through the University of Alberta or University of Calgary.

No published guide. Inventory listings at file level for 80 percent of holdings in Inmagic database. Fonds-level descriptions on Archives Network of Alberta are currently in progress.
