The Schedules by Year: Population and Non-Population Schedules

1870

The most significant change that occurred in the enumeration of the 1870 census was the inclusion of all individuals. The term “free” was removed and the schedules now included all inhabitants. This is the first time former slaves were included with name, age, occupation etc.

Question from the 1870 Population Schedule related to occupations:

  • Name of every person
  • Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each person, male or female (no age restriction)
  • Value of Real Estate Owned
  • Value of Real Estate
  • Value of Personal Estate
  • Education
