The original content for this article was contributed by The National Institute for Genealogical Studies in June 2012. It is an excerpt from their course English: Education,Health and Contemporary Documents  by Dr. Penelope Christensen. The Institute offers over 200 comprehensive genealogy courses for a fee ($).

Probate Records

These include administrations, appeals or assignations, bonds, cause papers, caveats, death duty registers, depositions, diaries, journals and minute books, exhibits, guardianships, inventories, limited or special grants, monitions and commissions, non-deposited probate records, probate accounts, receipts for legacies, renunciations, testamentary suits (for validity of a will, & content of a will), and wills.

Finding Records Associated with Death

Much is available via the Family History LibraryCatalogue  where it is updated daily. Otherwise investigate the relevant level of archive (national, county, local) for the type of record you seek, and don’t forget denominational and occupational archives and libraries as well. Further ideas can be found in Rogers.
