History of the parish

Vålerenga parish was created in 1899. The northeastern part of Oslo (Gamlebyen) parish was split off to become its own parish. The boundary was from the city limits to Odalsgata, Jordalsgata and Åkebergveien to Håkons gate, towards the south to Nonnegata, through Klostergata past Harold Hardrådes plass, down to Lo river and at last up along Lo river to the city limits.

In 1938 an area was split off east of Klostergata between the railroad line and the Lo river and given to Gamlebyen parish.

In 1958 new borders were made with Kampen and Østre Aker parishes,
