History

Parent County

1799--Washington County was created from Tyrrell County.  County seat: Lee's Mill (1799-1823); Plymouth (1823- present).  Washington County, now in Tennessee, was created from the District of Washington in 1777. North Carolina ceded her west territory to the Federal Government in 1789.

Boundary Changes

Record Loss

Courthouse destroyed in Federal bombardment of 1862 and fires of 1869 and 1881 have destroyed most of the court records and many of the land records.
