History

Washington District was created in 1791 from Cherokee Indian lands in northwest South Carolina.[1] See the 1791 South Carolina map.

Two subordinate counties were included within the overarching Washington District[2]:

In 1798 Washington District was renamed Pendleton District, South Carolina.[2] See the 1800 South Carolina Map.

For documents of people who lived in this area at this time, look for papers filed in Pickensville, the District and County Seat, or in Greenville, the County Seat.
