The U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is now on FamilySearch.org. The data is current as of October 2010. The most current updates will be available soon.

To search it, you can either search all historical records, and matching records from the index will be included in your search results. You can also search only the Social Security Death Index.

To search the Social Security Death Index without having to return to the blog for the link, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the FamilySearch search screen.
  2. Under the heading Browse by Collection, click USA, Canada, and Mexico. These links are located beneath the search fields.
  3. In the Place filters on the left side of the screen, click United States.
  4. Scroll down the list of records, and click U.S. Social Security Death Index. Because this collection is listed under U.S., it sorts at the beginning of the U's instead of after the collections whose names begin with "United States."
  5. Enter your search criteria, and click Search.

The U.S. Social Security Death Index is a database of death records that were created by the United States Social Security Death Index’s Death Master File. This useful file lists residents of the United States:

  • Who had a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Who have died since 1962
  • Whose death has been reported to the Social Security Administration

To see how this collection can help you, see United States Social Security Death Index (FamilySearch Historical Records) in the Research Wiki.

  1. FYI. The more you select the criteria of your search the better your results will be. Its not that confusing, the hardest part is scrolling down and selecting the information you are looking for........it may be an extra step or more to take but you will find more information about your individual. Ps. Just because FS doesnt have the information you are looking for doesnt mean it doesnt have any good information. Yelling about it on here is like me screaming at you for not having what I am looking for. A waist of time..... I was able to find a written letter from my grandmother attached to a marriage license of my deceased aunt, all I had to do was hit the arrow to view the next document. Happy hunting all

  11. I suggest that most of you re-read the intro. Look at the dates & places covered in the SSDI. Dont be frustrated if you dont find yourself in the data base. If you can type, it means you are no doubt still alive which is a good sign.

  12. Having used the excellent pilot version for some time - what a super site it was - I am now struggling greatly with the new site. I understand the need for updating etc and am trying hard to adapt but it seems impossible to refine the searches in any sensible way to meet the needs of those using it. I am sure everyone is grateful for the service you provide but please can you incorporate the old refining system.

I HELP OTHERS WITH THEIR GENEALOGY AND HAVE TAUGHT THEM HOW TO GET ON COMPUTER AND PULL UP INFO.NOW I HAVE TO TELL THEM IT WONT WORK. 14. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR FORMAT? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MADDENING - YOU GIVE ME NO CHOICE, I WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO LIBRARIES AND I AM ALMOST 80!!! I SIMPLY CANT GET AROUND THAT WELL AND NOW I WILL HAVE TO CEASE ALL MY 50 YEARS OF WORK TO GIVE TO MY FAMILY. I CANNOT IN MY FARTHEST MIND UNDERSTAND WHAT REASON YOU HAVE FOR SUCH A TERRIBLE SITUATION WE ARE IN. I GUESS I HAVE NO CHOICE - TO QUIT. I AM HEART BROKEN.

  28. I am sadly disappointed in your new website. I used to be able to find films to rent (early town records for New England towns) but now, they all seem to have disappeared. To get behind those early ancestors, we need to be able to get films on early town records, sometimes called Council Records by some New England towns. Early births, marriages and deaths were intermingled with early town records (Council Records) as there was no such thing at that time as Vital Records Books.

  32. The new format is NOT user friendly. I cannot find info I have previously found. The filters are too broad and are useless. 38. I have seen a MAJOR setback in this site I used to be able to find death Certificates by following the digital reference number & image number. NO LONGER Following YOUR instructions, Browse, Gigital #, Image #...Wrong person EVERYtime Wrong county most times. Exchanging emails has NOT solved the problem. How did sister find the death certificate? Obviously using a different search method than given in YOUR instructions to the general public. Something is really messed up
