James Blackman

(d: 1689)

Born in England the son of Rev. Adam Blakeman and Jane ???. James Blakeman or Blackman, was a very active businessman for his day, and was a farmer and miller. He bought the tide mill located at Eagle’s Nest, and then a mill at Old Mill green, which he sold; he then received from the the town a large tract of land to assist in the building of a new mill on the Near-Mill river, which is now called Peck’s Mill.

He married first to ??? Stiles, a daughter of Francis Stiles (Please see Stiles family history); and secondly he married his first cousin Miriam Wheeler, the daughter of Moses Wheeler. She was born 28 March 1647.

James Blackman left a Will at “Orinoge” (Orange Society of Stratford) on 18 July 1689, which was proved on 7 November 1689. He died between July and November of 1689.

Blackman’s widow, Miriam, remarried to Edward Groom and had a daughter, Mary, by him. Her Will was dated on 4 October 1693, at Milford. One of her witnesses was Jobamah Gunn. Her estate was inventoried at Stratford and Milford on 6 November 1693.

James and ??? (Stiles) Blackman had three children.10

to John Coney, Jr., about 1677. She died at Bos

ton on 17 April 1694.

2. Mary Blackman - Born 25 April 1661. Married

to George Searles.

3. Hannah Blackman - Born 21 January 1664/

1665. Married to John Gilbert about 1687.

She died before 1695. (Please see Gilbert fam-

ily history.)

John and Miriam (Wheeler) Blackman had

seven children.

4. Jane Blackman - Born 26 October 1668. Mar

ried 1st on 12 June 1687, to Joseph Russell, at

New Haven; 2nd to Thomas Griffin; 3rd on 24

May 1698, to James Clark, Jr. at Stratford.

5. Miriam Blackman - Born 8 February 1670/

1671. Married 1st to Joseph Northrop; 2nd to

John Smith.

6. Elizabeth Blackman - Born about 1673. Died

in 1691.

7. Martha Blackman - Born about 1676. Married

1st to Francis Ball; 2nd Benjamin Stebbins on

8 May 1701 at Springfield. Died at W. Spring-

field on 18 August 1746.

8. Zechariah Blackman - Born 26 May 1678. Mar

ried on 27 December 1704, 1st to Elizabeth

Denman; 2nd to widow Dinah (Thomas) Sher

man. He died at Stratford in 1765.

9. Adam Blackman - Born 1 January 1683/1684.

Married on 6 April 1708, to Bathsheba Pier-

son.

10. James Blackman - Born 4 December 1686.

Died at Stratfield on 29 October 1709.
