He arrived at the Massachusetts Bay with his family from England in 1634 on the “Elizabeth” at about the age of 37.

The family first settled in Cambridge, and he was one of the 25 “Adventures” who followed Thomas Hooker overland to found Hartford, Connecticut, in 1635, where he was a founder and original proprietor. When he first arrived, he kept a bridge over brick-hill brook, at five shillings per annum.

In 1639, he was chosen in the midwinter, to go and examine the country, or in the words of the records, “to view those parts of Unxus Sepus,” because Hartford desired more ample accommodations and Wethersfield also desired a plantation at Farmington.

He was accidently shot while with a friend in November 1643. He died while dictating a nuncupative will in the presence of two friends who had been summoned in haste to receive his last words on 6 November 1643. At a Connecticut Particular Court in early 1644 [probably in March], the “jury find that John Ewe, by misadventure, was the cause of the death of Tho[mas] Scott. *HENRY SCOTT (1560-1624)

***MARTHA WHATLOCK (1568-1611)

HENRY SCOTT was baptized 1 November 1560 at Rattlesden, Suffolk, England; the son of Edmund Scott (1525-1621) and Joane (1532-1615.) He married Martha Whatlock 25 July 1594 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England. Henry was a yeoman. He was also a questman at Rattlesden in 1601 and in 1619. He was a surveyor in 1609, overseer of the poor in 1613, and constable from 1616 to 1618.

He made his will 24 September 1623, and it was proved 10 January 1624. His will reads: “Item I give unto Martha my well beloved wife, the house wherein I now dwell with the appentenances and all my lands and grounds both free and copy thereunto belonging and appertaining during the term of her natural life, and after her decease to Roger my son and his heirs forever. I give unto Abigale Kemball my grandchild forty shillings to be paid her or her heirs or assigns at the age of one and twenty years. Item to Henrie Kemball my grandchild twenty shillings to be paid at 21. To Elizabeth Kemball my grandchild twenty shillings to be paid at 21. To Richard Kemball my grandchild twenty shillings to be paid at 21. To Thomas Skott 5 pounds within one year after his decease. To Rev. Peter Devereux of Rattlesden 10 pounds.” Martha was to be his executive. Henry was buried 24 December 1624 in Rattlesden, England, at age 64.

MARTHA WHATLOCK was baptized 18 July 1568 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England, and was the daughter of Thomas Whatlock (1535-1608) and Joane (1539-1653.) She married Henry Scott 25 July 1594 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England. Her husband died 24 December 1624. Martha sailed on the ship “Elizabeth” from Ipswich, England to New England in 1634, along with her son Thomas, daughter Ursula Kemball, and their families.

The Great Migration. Ten years after the death of Martha’s husband, she set sail for America with her son, Thomas Scott, and her daughter Ursula (Scott) Kemball and their spouses, and ten grandchildren from the ages of one to 18. This family group embarked on the ship “Elizabeth” of Ipswich on the last of April 1634, taking the oath of allegiance at the customs house before sailing.

It is an amazing story of Providence and the skill of English seamen that dozens of Atlantic Ocean passages were made in little wooden ships bringing our Puritan ancestors to America almost without mishap in the 1630’s. There were perhaps 30,000 emigrants from England to New England before the English Civil War. These folks were mainly from the English middle-class, self-reliant and motivated to find a place where they might live, worship, and raise their families without government harassment. This movement of people is called the “Great Migration.”

The “Elizabeth” left Ipswich, Suffolk, England on April 10, 1634. The ship’s “master” was William Andrews, arriving in Massachusetts Bay. The date of record, in this case, is some six months after the ship departed. No record (other than departure) of this particular voyage remains. Typically, ships making this voyage weighed between 10 and 100 tons (the Mayflower was quite big at 180 tons) and traveled at 7-10 knots with a passenger load of around one hundred. Most were from northeast of London which was then known as the “eastern Association.”

There were a few key factors that caused so many of our ancestors to leave England. The region had been the economic power house of England but it was hard hit by an economic depression in the first half of the 1600s. Perhaps not coincidentally the Puritan movement developed deep roots in this area and its bordering counties. Dedham and Essex, for example, was considered a “hot bed” of Puritan agitation. The Church of England eventually tired of this and helped drive the militants to the new world.

She died after 1634 in Massachusetts.
