JOSEPH T. BROWN

The funeral for Joseph T. Brown, longtime Washougal High School teacher and coach, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the school. He died Tuesday of cancer in a Vancouver hospital. He was 56.

Mr. Brown was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on March 13, 1934, and had lived in Washougal since 1967. He taught U.S. history and driver's education at the high school. He also had taught and coached at White Salmon for five years.

Five of Mr. Brown's 14 Washougal boys basketball teams qualified for the state tournament. The Panthers had never appeared in the state tournament until he led them there in 1972.

He was out of basketball coaching for several years, but resumed coaching in the girls basketball program in 1988.

Mr. Brown earned bachelor's and graduate degrees from Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.

Surviving are his wife, Jane of Washougal; sons, Jason and Jeffrey, both of Washougal; and sister, Linda Leach of Banning, Calif.

Disposition will be by cremation.

The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Joe Brown Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o Riverview Savings Bank, 700 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas 98607.
