In 1743, Mathias Harter, with his mother and two brothers, arrived in Philadelphia on a ship from Rotterdam. Mathias settled in Pennsylvania and was living in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, in 1771. By 1777 he was a resident of Lebanon Township. During the Revolution, he served in the militia from Lancaster County. In his will, signed in 1789, he named his wife., Anna Maria, four sons and two daughters. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and elsewhere.

Includes the Bowman, Sauer (Sower), and other related families.
