The Utah State Historical Society, Utah's Division of State History, was founded in 1897 on the 50th anniversary of the first settlement in the Salt Lake Valley by the Mormon Pioneers. The society became a state agency in 1917. In 1968 the societies' name was changed to the Division of State History. The society later became a part of the Department of Community and Economic Development. The offices were in the State Capitol from 1915 to 1957, then in the historic Kearns Mansion (now the Governor's Residence) from 1957 to 1977. The society have been housed in the Historic Rio Grande Depot since 1980. Since 1928, when the first volume of the Utah Historical Quarterly was published, the best scholarship on Utah history usually finds its way into the pages of UHQ. The journal is filled with articles, memoirs, annotated primary sources, book reviews, and photos. UHQ is published four times yearly.
