Walter Mitchell, an Englishman, immigrated to America with his brother, Thomas, and settled in Virginia. He married Rachell Appling and had four sons and a daughter. Two of the sons, Richard and Thomas, migrated to Georgia in 1803 and settled near Athens. Joshua Surad Mitchell (1793-1838) married Mary Hazelwood Alexander (1793- 1856) of Charlotte, Virginia. They had nine children. Descendants listed lived in Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and elsewhere.
