The Howell family came from Wales and settled in Virginia; some of the sons moved to Kentucky. In the second generation, John Howell, born ca. 1780, moved from Kentucky to Ganntown, Johnson County, Illinois. Later generations went to Williamson County, and to California.

William Marion Howell (1845-1927) of Johnson County, Illinois, married Hannah Gosnell in 1866; they had nine children. William was a successful farmer and active in both community and Methodist Church affairs.
