George Barber was born about 1743, probably in Augusta County, Virginia, married Margaret Watkins in December 1766 or early 1767, moved from the Wake-Johnston Counties area of North Carolina, and settled on Long Creek of the Broad River in present-day Wilkes County, Georgia.
