Samuel Oakes married Joanna Phillips in 1693 in Boston, Massachusetts, and is probably related to the third of the four early immigrant families (as listed below), although this relationship has not been established. The four early families were (1) the Nathaniel Oaks family to Marlborough, Mass.; (2) the Thomas and Edward Oakes families to Cambridge-Malden-North Yarmouth, Mass. before 1640, and including Rev. Uriah oakes, an early president of Harvard College; (3) William Wales, an Welsh immigrant, whose sons William and John lived in Worcester, Mass.; and (4) the German immigrant families to Pennsylvania, whose name was originally spelled Och or Ochs. Descendants and relatives of Samuel and Joanna Oakes lived in New England, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and elsewhere.
