Artemus Madison Hicks (1860-1920) was born at Farmersville, Texas, the son of Elijah Bracher Hicks (1829-1907) and Mahala Huff Word Hicks (1838-1902). He married Sarah Martha (Mattie) Honaker in 1887 at Farmersville. They had six children, 1888-1900. The family lived in Collin County, Texas, near Farmersville; then moved to Coleman, Texas; then to San Angelo, Texas; and finally to a ranch in Pecos River County, Texas. He died at San Angelo, Texas. Sarah Martha (Mattie) Honaker (1864-1934) was born at Farmersville, Texas, the daughter of William Patton Honacker (1827-1901) and Eliza Ann Dickenson Honaker (1829-1914). She died at the home of her son in Terrell County, Texas. A. Madison and Mattie Hicks are buried at San Angelo, Texas. Most descendants lived in Texas.

Ancestors include: Absalom Hicks (ca. 1745-ca. 1770) of Granville County, North Carolina -- John Word (fl. 1620-1652) of Wales and Virginia -- Jacob Honaker/Honeekar (d. 1796) of Wythe County, Virginia -- Henry Dickenson (fl. 1654) of London, England, and Prince Edward County, Virginia.
