Joab Chappell was born in 1781 in Perquimans County, North Carolina, the son of Job and Leah Bond Chappel. He married Elizabeth Elliott in North Carolina in 1802. They had four children, 1809- ca. 1826. The family migrated to Indiana in 1810. He died in 1833. Most descendants listed lived in Indiana.

Includes some ancestral families in North Carolina and Virginia.
