The church was completed in 1657 as the church for the new Jordan Parish which had been divided from Westover Parish. In 1688 Jordan Parish was reunited with Westover Parish. Merchants Hope Church remained part of Westover Parish until 1720 when it became part of Martin's Brandon Parish. It is now part of St. John's Parish in Hopewell.
