Notes

John S. Cundiff (1820-1890) was the son of Christopher and Sarah Cundiff. He married 1840 in Hardin Co., Kentucky Matilda Ione Purcell (1819-1880), the daughter of Roderick "Roddy" and Drusean (Purcell) Purcell. They were the parents of thirteen children, who were born in Hardin and Hancock Counties, Kentucky. The early Cundiff ancestors, Jonathan and his brother, Richard (1725-1774), were born in England. They came to America and settled in Bedford Co., Va. Both served with the Virginia troops during the Revolutionary War.
