Chiefly, a record of many generations of descendants of Philip Coon who was born about 1695 in Holland or Germany. The name of his wife or wives is unknown, but they had at least eleven children. There is general acceptance that the Philip Coon family came from Holland before 1720. Probably, Philip and two brothers emigrated to Philadelphia in 1718 or 1719. It appears that they were originally Mennonites, but earliest records in America show they were Baptists. Philip and his brothers remained in the Philadelphia area until around 1760, when they joined a migration to the West. Presumably, one of Philips brothers went down into the valley of Virginia, but Philip and the other brother traveled on West to Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Philip Coon died in Coon's Run, Marion County, West Virginia about 1782 or 1783. Descendants lived in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Includes Coon, Koon, Kohn, Kuhn, Cooan and related families.
