This petition "provides the signature or mark, county, parish, and townland of origin, number of male and female children, and names and addresses of relatives in the homeland for some 700 mostly Irish families who were in the vicinity of Bytown [Ottawa] on 5 February 1829."--p. 1.

Petition compiled by Lt.-Col. John By in response to a "questionnaire circulated by a British parlimentary committee to the Irish who had emigrated under the Hon. Peter Robinson" about their opinions on immigration to Ontario and the possibility of government-supported emigration from Ireland to Ontario. This petition comes from "the Irishmen working on the first sections of the Rideau Canal near the new village of Bytown [Ottawa]."--p. 2.
